Memory Project: One Million Students

This Saturday, November 7, 2009, The Memory Project, a program of the Historica-Dominion Institute, will bring together veterans, servicemen and women, students and teachers Toronto, to celebrate the one-millionth young person reached through their national Memory Project initiative.
The event will run from 2 – 4pm, and will be attended by the Minister of Veteran Affairs, the Hon. Greg Thompson who will offer his remarks and present certificates of recognition to Grant McRae, The Memory Project’s first volunteer veteran speaker and to Rachel Jean, a grade 11 student from Oakville Trafalgar High School who will represent the one million students who have shared in the stories of The Memory Project.
"The Memory Project is delighted to announce that, eight years after the project began, we have reached one million students”, says Jeremy Diamond, Managing Director of the Historica-Dominion Institute’s National Office. “This is an important milestone for us, but even more so, it is a testament to the continued dedication of our veteran volunteers. Because of our Memory Project veterans, one million young Canadians have heard stories of service and sacrifice and have had the privilege of meeting a living example of Canadian history."
The Memory Project Speakers’ Bureau, created in 2001, connects veterans and students online and in classrooms across the country. The more than 1,500 veteran volunteers represent a wide range of conflicts, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Peacekeeping Operations and Canadian Forces experiences.

The Historica-Dominion Institute is a national charitable organization that was launched on September 1, 2009 through the amalgamation of two existing organizations: The Historica Foundation of Canada and The Dominion Institute. Its mandate is to build active and informed citizens through a greater knowledge and appreciation of the history, heritage and stories of Canada. Some of its signature programs include: Encounters with Canada, The Memory Project, Passages to Canada and The Canadian Encyclopedia.
