Two Minutes to Remember

To mark the launch of the Take Two Minutes To Remember campaign, The Historica-Dominion Institute released the following statement:

“Remembrance Day is a day like no other in Canada. It is an occasion – once a year, every autumn – for Canadians to honour those who have served, and continue to serve, our country. It is a unique expression of solidarity for those who have those who have fought, or are fighting, for democracy and freedom.

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, The Historica-Dominion Institute is inviting all Canadians - at home, at school, at work - to take two minutes to remember.

Two minutes of silence, everywhere, across this country. Two minutes to stop and think. Two minutes to reflect and respect.

We hope Canadians at home, at school, in offices, factories and farms, will stop for two minutes. Imagine Canadians from coast to coast to coast -- on the street, in the supermarket, at train stations, bus terminals or airports -- stopping for two minutes to honour the men and women who have died to make this country what it is.

We are asking Canadians today to join us in this personal commitment:

At eleven o'clock on November 11, we will take two minutes to remember. We will stand up and be silent. When we do, we will join our fellow Canadians, wherever they may be, whatever language they speak, in honouring those who have served and are serving Canada, and those who have died for our country. When we take two minutes to remember, we pay tribute to their courage and sacrifice.”

Canadians, both individuals and organizations, are asked to commit to Take Two Minutes to Remember at www.historica-dominion.ca/en/2minutes.

The Historica-Dominion Institute also wishes to acknowledge the Royal Canadian Legion’s Two-Minute Wave of Silence campaign developed in 1999.

The Historica-Dominion Institute is a national charitable organization that was launched on September 1, 2009 through the amalgamation of two existing organizations: The

Historica Foundation of Canada and The Dominion Institute. Its mandate is to build active and informed citizens through a greater knowledge and appreciation of the history, heritage and stories of Canada. Some of its signature programs include: Encounters with Canada, The Memory Project, Passages to Canada and The Canadian Encyclopedia.
